No condom is No to intercourse
The Worldconnectors are preparing a statement about Gender & Diversity. Here you can already give your opinion about the following statement:
National communication campaigns should publicly encourage girls and boys and their parents and friends to say that no condom (female or male regardless of sexual preference) is no to intercourse. |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
How practical is the above statement. Lets not forget about how adventurous most of our youth are becoming this days as far as sex is concern, not forgetting the promotion it has recently gain in the media through the introduction technology. We are now in the improved information, communication and technology (ICT) era. Use of the internet and other means of information are gaining more grounds. Female or male, no matter the age can easily log on the internet or access any site especially the pornographic sites. In my country Ghana, there has been an increased in the number of radio and television stations, not forgetting the contributions of radio and television in dissemination, education and entertaining the masses as well as promoting of other social vices. Children, youth and young adults are all migrating to the cities in search of greener pastures. An extended family system is gradually eroding in Africa. We are witness many family breakdowns among other factors.
For instance, in Ghana, the late 80"s, ‘Valentine day’ in Ghana was not popular as compared to now. 21st Century saw a drastic change through valentine day’s promotion by the media which has come with increases in other vices. In some cases among the street children, sex is counted among difference means of ‘street survival strategy’. The question is how can the children and youth living on the streets of the capital cities say no to intercourse! What are views voiceover2015 member?

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
In the case of the Philippines, a campaign as 'No condom is No to intercourse', will only be successful once the Lower House and the Senate approves the bill on the new version of the Reproductive Health. Though it is not illegal to sell or buy condoms around, it is not well promoted as well. Many stores and pharmacy sells condoms. However, Filipinos are not yet open to issues/ challenges on topics as sex and sexuality. Some will still look at you in a 'sinful manner' if you buy condom at a convenience store. This campaign will be successful in the case of the Philippines once the dilemma of converging the stand of the Roman Catholic Church (Pro-life) and the STate (pro-State) is resolved. Through this breakthrough in national level decision making, problems on increasing population and scarce resources somehow will be addressed. |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
In my opinion, national communication campaigns that emphasize 'No condom, No intercourse' are probably a good strategy. Still, I agree with Paul that we should stay realistic about the results that these campaigns will entail.
Because of something that I experienced as quite disturbing in such a behavioral change campaign, I would also like to place a word of caution. It is important to define clearly the target group of your campaign, especially if your target group is children. If you try to induce the 'No condom, No intercourse' mindset, the children should not be too young when you confront them with such serious issues which may be far from their mind.
I also think that it might be a good idea to ask advice from a LOCAL behavioral expert on this issue. I emphasize the word 'local' because such an expert will be better able to take into account the culture specific aspects.
Another strategy that I think will have good results lies in identifying and backing up change agents. A possibility is to make use of the contributions of CBO's and NGOs, but in my opinion another very important partners in this regard are faith-based organizations. |

I think is a wonderful campaign but I think it should also be based in Education to have long term impact. This is to create the fact that sexual relations should be a responsible decission for everyone including teenagers! |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
Yes would we not all love to see a world, especially a developing world where people mostly the young ones can stand up and clearly say no condom is no to intercourse. That is the perfect picture, however realistically do we think that a campaign to put these words and these beliefs in the mouths of the people is going to bring about magic without looking at the root cause of why most people cannot say no to intercourse even if they know having sex without a condom is the fastest way to ending one's life.
I think as this campaign is thought of, there is a need to look into the issue of improving accessibility to and availability of condoms to the people in targeted areas.
we need to realise that even if there is a high demand for condoms almost everywhere in the world, there are insufficient funds to provide these condoms. many African governments mine included (Uganda), hardly provide funding for Sexual reproductive health programs and the country depends on donors for this, which means that condoms may not be given the priority they should. even with increasing demand, there are many people who still cannot afford to buy condoms and these are the ones who should be saying no condom is no to intercourse.
I believe there is a need to first improve access to condoms and availability of condoms before people can be fully empowered to say with clarity that no condom is not to intercourse. |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
NO Condom no to Intercourse.
The idea is a brillent one. But we also have to be careful with culture. Again, I want to say here that in Africa, this is going to give us parents a though time. Most cultures in Africa do not encourage children and parents to discuss about sex or intercourse together. It is forbidden. This will need a serious campaign for us.
How do we go about doing this? We need to start working on plans and strategy to tacle this issue. i will be glad were we to start with Liberia. Because you know what, Liberia has one of the largest RUBBER plantations in the world. It is hard to believe that we import condoms.
Most of the time you go to hotels or motels and you actually have to buy the freely didtributed condoms from hotels owners. If you do not have extra money, then you have to accept skin to skin whichis effecting most of young girls and boys.
So let start this campaign today and be plexable with cuture yah!!!
Be a part.

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
It is a good slogan given how HIV/AIDS has ravaged Africa in particular
However, it will depend on who the message is targeted at.If it is targeted to young teenagers then its fine because we know this is the period they will be experimenting. However, it must be part of an information campaign that also shows that there are other choices like Abstinence until marriage. It must also be supported by an institutional framework that makes sure that the condoms are easily accessible to the people concerned and information for their proper use is widely distributed
This slogan must not be targeted at married couples because it can create a lot of conflict. For example if i am married and my wife start to say that , "no condom, no sex" that will create serious problems in the family. Thus targeting the right audience is very important |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
Yeap, support !
But as said in many previous comments, the campaign may face certain problems. Those problems are clearly discussed in the other topics of the Voiceover forum (corruption, poverty, stability).
So, if the campaign creators want to have it successfully, condoms should be available everywhere ! In my town, students of Medical school (secondary school, students in age 15-19) solemnly mark December 1, international AIDS day. During these "celebration" education campaign (adjusted to audience) follows. Students from the Medical school teach their peers about disease, symptoms, prevention and risk management. Greatest part of the campaigns, naturally, prescribes free condoms to be delivered to teenagers. But no, those free stocks are always unavailable.
That is the moment when campaigns like this could jump in with the slogan and of course the working tool. |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
Good statement.
The situation with condom promotion in Vietnam is somehow very close to what Reine K.R. described in the Philippines. There were some campaigns on TV, some pilot projects on installing automatic condom machines in hotels or beer bars, however the success is in doubt.
So the statement is now should be promoted and lobbied first to the Parliament and the Ministry of Health (in Vietnam) and then the aid would follow to launch the campaign to involve more social groups and facilities.

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
Most men in my country (Liberia) do not like condoms. By the time you be friend them the next thing is to know if you like (skin to skin) sex without condoms. If your answer is no condoms no sex, you have lost that guy. It is a serious problem around here. So we as members of voiceover really need to exert effort in get more involve with this campaign. But at the same time we should not scare away the men. In Liberia, there are more women than men. So we should not drive them away, we will also be victims if we scare the men away. |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
For me this is a brilliant idea and it needed to be communicated into the every corner of our part of the world. Though culturally it very hard to talk about sex in my country that openly but presently we are facing many deadly diseases and sexual intercourse without condom is one of the reason among many reasons for the spreading of these fatal diseases. I think the time his now come to discusses these ideas openly in public for the welfare of the humanity. |

"I will not repeat what the colleagues have contributed on the slogan, most of which are the "difficult issues" to be dealt with. Whereas its a good slogan,I am reluctant to encourage its usage for the simple reason that in its state it does not depict to the intended audience what is in it for them!
I would lobby for a rewording to may be "No condom...yes to misery...choose!" This may not be the best(can be improved) wording but the finer details can be through various communications strategies applied in its promotion. So if it captures what is in it for the audience, then with a multitude of strategies ,it will yield the intended outcome even faster.Denis(Uganda) |

Re: No condom is No to intercourse
Does really the statement,"No condom is no to intercourse" reflect Gender and Diversity? While I support an aggressive HIV/AIDS campaign, I wonder if a such statement would discourage premarital sex and promiscuity.I am afraid, if National Communication Campaigns encourage girls and boys and their parents and friends to endorse a such statement, the end result will be that all children and youth will be convinced that it is fine for them to have sex as long as they use condoms. Such move would make the condom industry to flourish and we don't want to believe that the intended goal of this statement is to make the society buy more condoms. What about other sexually transmissible diseases which are contracted through deep kissing and smooching if the saliva is contaminated or through deep wounds and cuts in the mouth? So far no condom for the mouth( I am not lobbying for one though)! Can't we tell boys and girls to abstain from sex until they get married? It still works and it is the best way of prevention by the way. |
