Re: More focus in development aid
Aid should be limited to 10 instead of 36 countries.
I believe that in order to achieve aid effectiveness to accomplish the goal of development-aid, the Netherlands should stop fragmenting its aid and limit itself to a small number of places where it has a proper presence. This is in accordance with the Akan proverb which says “edwuma sin nnya akatua” literally “a job not fully completed does not yield remuneration” If the Netherlands’ development-aid is concentrated to a small number of places (10 instead of 36 countries), it will be able to achieve its ambition and yield fruitful results.
Since not every developed nation is donating 0.8 percent of its GDP for development cooperation as the Netherlands is sticking to, it will be cumbersome to achieve the ambition of the development-aid if it is fragmented. Another Akan proverb says “dua kor gye ehum a, obu” meaning “if a single tree stands the storm, it breaks” By this proverb I mean all the developed nations should come on board and follow the Netherlands’ effort.
Thus if all the developed nations could give out 0.8 percent of GDP for development cooperation, the Netherlands should still concentrate on all the 36 countries in which it is currently active but increase monitoring. On the other hand if all the developed nations will not stick to the 0.8 percent GDP (MDG 8), the Netherlands should limit its aid to 10 countries in order to achieve aid effectiveness.
