(ISO) standards & development corporation

First published in 1987, the ISO 9000 series of standards enable an organization to set up a quality management system and supply products and services that are free of non-conformities and aim to achieve customer satisfaction. I had a talk with a entrepreneur in my country who had some doubts about "going ISO".He mentioned the amount of money his company would need to get certified and asked if his company would "succeed or not " if he should not apply for the standards, especially when he dreams of competing with western companys..

What should I tell him? How can we, dutch and non dutch , stimulate entrepreneurs in developing countries to cope with this issue? Lets also think about for instance the coffee farmers and the UTZ certification ?
