More focus in development aid

According to the WRR report, the Netherlands should bring more focus in their policy regarding development aid. Aid should be limited to 10 instead of 36 countries. Do you agree?

Re: More focus in development aid

I think focussing on the number of countries is irrelevant. Much more important is to look at real grass roots effect on people's lives, empowerment of individuals. This can only be done by stimulating entrepreneurship. Doing business with small communities of people is key for development aid. See for example what SharePeople does.

Re: More focus in development aid

Focusing development Aid has many problems. First of all how can it be possible to decide which country does need more aid. This sounds terribly unhuman because some countries require investments in one thing or another...and all of those needs imply human needs and imply human lifes. How can you choose who lives and who not??

At the same time..thinking that Africa only requires development is not true. Many countries still require help inclusively in Europe who are struggling with many issues. Latinamerica for example many countries are better but have the legacy of conflict or tragedies and working towards their growth may take years and years.

Finally focusing on only ten countries..implies prioritizing some countries but politically may sound as preference and far away from being fair.

I would only consider this possibility if actually Netherlands will commit with Fair Trade with all the countries who are struggling against subsidies and barriers...then if they take out away the aid...countries may still survive with exports arriving to all the corners of Europe.

Re: More focus in development aid

Aid should be limited to 10 instead of 36 countries.

I believe that in order to achieve aid effectiveness to accomplish the goal of development-aid, the Netherlands should stop fragmenting its aid and limit itself to a small number of places where it has a proper presence. This is in accordance with the Akan proverb which says “edwuma sin nnya akatua” literally “a job not fully completed does not yield remuneration” If the Netherlands’ development-aid is concentrated to a small number of places (10 instead of 36 countries), it will be able to achieve its ambition and yield fruitful results.

Since not every developed nation is donating 0.8 percent of its GDP for development cooperation as the Netherlands is sticking to, it will be cumbersome to achieve the ambition of the development-aid if it is fragmented. Another Akan proverb says “dua kor gye ehum a, obu” meaning “if a single tree stands the storm, it breaks” By this proverb I mean all the developed nations should come on board and follow the Netherlands’ effort.

Thus if all the developed nations could give out 0.8 percent of GDP for development cooperation, the Netherlands should still concentrate on all the 36 countries in which it is currently active but increase monitoring. On the other hand if all the developed nations will not stick to the 0.8 percent GDP (MDG 8), the Netherlands should limit its aid to 10 countries in order to achieve aid effectiveness.
