Legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv

What is your opinion about the proposal to legalise prostitution in South Africa? Do we have to protect the rights of women and girls by legalising prostitution? Or is it better to ban prostitution by regulation or maybe police force?

Give your comment on the following thesis: legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv.

Regardless of where I live I consider that legalizing prostitution is a way of protecting womans rights. This will also protect the fact that girls and child will not be prostituted and will help the impact of human trafficking. In a way Netherlands can teach the world about the legalization of it because it does have regulations which allow it but protect as well.

Re: Legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv

Dear Friends,
With due respect and without any bias,I think it is a myth to think that legalizing prostitution will help containing the spread of HIV/AIDS and support the rights of girls and women. The opposite is true.
The word "prostitute" means someone who gives sex for money. Thus a prostitute could be a woman or a man. Just think of it. Have you ever approached any police station to find out how many cases of prostitution-linked crime are committed every week? Prostitution is a tool that destroys the society because a promiscuous society is a society without a future. Using HIV/AIDS case to justify the need of legalizing prostitution is as unacceptable as using Human Rights to campaign for wrong things. Who would like to see their mothers, daughters, sisters and aunties becoming prostitutes? Who would have the guts to say publicly, "Ladies and Gentlemen let me introduce to you my uncle who is a professional prostitute"? Prostitution is not the oldest profession but one of the oldest sins and corruption.
I have sympathy for women and girls that I do not wish any of them to be a prostitute. I don't see how a person who is against rape and sexual abuse should turn around and campaign for legalizing prostitution. I think all men and women who want to be prostitutes need some kind of help.
Not only legalizing prostitution would increase the spread of HIV/AIDS, it would also increase STDs, pornography, divorce, adultery, fornication, pre-marital sex, drug and alcohol consumption, banditry, violence and all sorts of corruption. I am afraid one day some rights activists will start campaigning for legalization of incest and bestiality.
You don't need to be religious to see that prostitution should be discouraged and banned because it destroys the society. Just by mere human conscience, we all should campaign against prostitution.
We cannot choose for South Africa or Netherlands if they decide to legalize prostitution, it would be their choice which of course would be regrettable by any moral standard.

Re: Legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv

Legalizing prostitution will have very little effect in containing and managing the spread of HIV/AIDS. If prostitution is not seen as one of the social ills and the causes identified and addressed, the problem will still be starring at our faces. Most young girls are lured into prostitution due to poverty. This put these girls and of late boys who practice this trade at a gullible position many of whom can not say 'no' to unprotected sex when the payment looks attractive. It is about time we call a spade a spade and see to quality human investment. An investment that will bring sanity to our daily lives and prosperity for all. To me it is best if we could actively initiate programmes that will make the trade unattractive other than legalizing it.

Thank you for this topic. As much as I appreciate other people's views, I feel the opposite is true about this assertion especially in this part of the world. My view is that some people like experimenting, even wrong things. Thus if Prostitution was to be legalised at least speaking from my context, a lot of people will put their lives on the line as the liberty associated with this legalisation will be abused.

Re: Legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv

Hi friends,

I am sure that prostitution in the first place is against many of our religious beliefs and morals. The fact that SA government is actually sending out conflicting messages about HIV/AIDS (to abstain to these social evils), but now they actually promote prostitution. If these workers get training and awareness workshops, by all means they will have some sort of credibility. But how will they be sure it will be legal and safe? Who is going to protect these women? How safe will it be for young girls? Will tourist be responsible? Is this a way of generating money because the sex industry will thrive?

I think it will not be possible to rule out, that if any safety measures will be put in place, they will be measurable or monitored. I do have little faith that the legalization will lead to any good except money. And will lead to moral degeneration and the spread of diseases. Whether we have to use strict reinforcement or not, in many poor areas young women will turn to prostitution as they already are. There are way to many risks and is not in the best interest of any woman

Re: Legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv

This a very HOT issue. My view is that if there was a time frame attached to the legalizing for study purposes then we checked the results if they would be positive(in terms of HIV/AIDS prevalence reducing to the lowest) then we permanently legalize it for good. Because with this challenge we have in the name of HIV/AIDS any moves that would lead to decreasing the raising statics must be welcomed and embraced. BUT on the other hand if unfortunately the numbers raise to the highest then we must fight at all costs not to legalize it. (Prostitution)

I know we cant experiment with policy and leagal issues but hey when it comes to the fight of HIV/AIDS we need to be realists and show flexibility. I saluate everyones contributions though.

Thumbs up Voice2015!!

News from Britisch newspaper: Britain is to give 42m condoms to South Africa in response to a request for an extra billion as part of an HIV prevention drive before the World Cup, the government will announce today.

The request for British help in stockpiling sufficient condoms for the expected influx of thousands of football supporters in three months' time was made during President Jacob Zuma's recent visit to the UK to meet the Queen.

Legalising prostitution will help to contain and manage the spread of Aids/Hiv have to balanced with information about HIV-AIDS to prevention and overcome to HIV-AIDS.

Goverment have to regulations to protect them from sex crimes, violence, and drugs abuse. Society should do support and input about them, don't let them become the "colonized."
